Steem, Steem Power and SBD explained easy

If you are new to the Steem blochchain, then all the different tokens can be pretty complicated to understand, but this post aims to help you better understand it all. Below is a short explanation of each of the three different tokens

Steem

Steem is the main token on the Steem blockchain. You can trade, sell and buy Steem from other users as you wish. You will get awarded Steem or SBD in addition to Steem Power when your contribute to the blockchain by posting or commenting.

Your main source of Steem will most likely be from powering down Steem Power, if you choose to do so. If not it will probably be from selling SBD on the internal market. 

Steem Power (SP)

Steem Power is the powered up version of Steem. It it worth exactly the same as one Steem, but it cannot freely be traded to other accounts, but must instead first be powered down. When powering down Steem Power, each SP gets converted to one Steem.

The bonus to keeping Steem Power instead of Steem is that you get higher upvotes. Each Steem Power gives you more influence, and once you have a few thousand SP you will get upvotes that are beginning to give some nice profits to those you vote for.

There is also a downside to owning Steem Power instead of Steem, and that is that you cannot transfer Steem Power to anyone else. If you want to sell you need to power down first. When you power down, you get 1/13th of your Steem Power in Steem each week for a total of 13 weeks. This means that it takes just over 3 months to get all your money down from Steem Power if you want to sell it.

Steem Power is the main reward used to give to curators. Posters will also be able to get 100 % of their post rewards in SP, or a 50/50 % split between Steem Power and either SBD or Steem. 

Steem Dollar (SBD)

The Steem Dollar is another token that is used on the Steem blockchain, and the positive thing about this is that it will tend to have a value close to $1. It it technically pegged to the USD, but contrary to its intent, the value has been changing a lot for the SBD as well. Anyway, keeping this token is nice if you think the price of Steem will fall, since the SBD will stay mostly stable, while Steem can have large rises and falls in terms of value.

How to convert Steem to SBD, and the other way around

There are many reasons why you might want to convert SBD to Steem, or Steem to SBD, and it's actually pretty easy to do. To get Steem from SBD, you can do the following: Go to wallet and click on the small arrow next to your SBD balance. Select the option "Convert to Steem", and just type in the amount of wish to convert. This process will take 3,5 days to complete, so you will not be able to access your founds during this time. Trading on the internal market Another way to do it is by trading on the internal market. This also lets you convert Steem to SBD, which is not possible by the same method as above. The only downside with this method is that you need to wait until you find a buyer before you get your new founds, so don't put the sell price too high, or you might not ever be able to sell it.
